Women’s Basketball Falls To Lesley, 74-47
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore
guard Christina Korney (Feeding Hills, Mass.)
scored a team-high 10 points, but Hailee Lowe (Hamilton,
Mass.) poured in a game-best 20 points to lead four Lesley
University players in double figures as the Lynx topped the Blazers
74-47 in Thursday evening’s New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC) women’s basketball game at Picknelly Arena.
With the loss, Elms moves to 8-14 on the season, 7-6 in NECC
action, while Lesley improves to 11-8 overall, 10-2 in league
play.
Lesley burst out of the gate with a 10-0 run over the first 6:03.
Elms answered with six straight points on layups by sophomore point
guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.),
sophomore forward Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.)
and senior forward Erin Hutchinson (Groton,
Mass.).
A 16-2 run put the Lynx ahead 26-8 with 5:37 remaining in the
opening period, and then used a layup by Cassidy Freed
(Brattleboro, V.T.) with 2:20 to go in the frame to give
the Lynx their largest lead of the half (19 points) at 33-14.
Elms ended the stanza with a 10-2 run behind a pair of layups by
Normandie, a bucket each from sophomore guard Katie Condon
(Sandy Hook, Conn.) and sophomore guard Brooke
Miller (West Warwick, R.I.), and two Korney free throws,
setting the score at 35-24 at intermission.
Lesley scored seven unanswered points to start the second period,
and then used a 15-4 run to post a commanding 29-point lead (57-28)
at the 11:45 mark. Lowe netted 10 points, while Brianne
Caira (Pelham, N.H.) chipped in six points to highlight
the stretch for the Lynx.
From there, Lesley maintained at least a 25-point cushion, and
extended its lead to 30 points on four occasions.
The Lynx limited Elms to just 26.5-percent shooting from the
field.
Condon finished with seven points, while Talmadge added six.
Callahan hauled in a team-best seven rebounds in the losing
effort.
Lowe finished with seven boards in addition to her 20 points,
while Caira earned a double-double with 16 points and a game-high
17 rebounds.
Erika Hill (Durham, Conn.) and Kaitlyn
Wechsler (Merrick, N.Y.) chipped in 11 and 10 points
respectively to help secure the win.
The Lynx shot a stellar 50-pecent for the game, including a 56.7
mark in the second half.
Elms returns to NECC action on Saturday, Feb. 13 when it hosts
Mitchell College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Picknelly
Arena.
