CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore
guard Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) netted a
team-high 11 points, but Brianne Caira (Pelham,
N.H.) scored 16 points and hauled down 14 rebounds to help
guide Lesley University to a 55-47 victory over the Blazers in
Thursday evening’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)
women’s basketball game in Cambridge, Mass.
With the loss, Elms falls to 6-11 on the season, 5-3 in NECC play,
while Lesley ups its record to 7-8 overall, 6-2 in conference
action.
With the score knotted at 23-23 at halftime, Elms sophomore point
guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.) swished
a trey and converted a free throw to give the Blazers a 27-25
advantage at the 17:44 mark of the second frame.
A three-pointer by Lesley’s Kaitlyn Wechsler
(Merrick, N.Y.) sparked an 8-0 by the Lynx that gave
Lesley a six-point, 33-27 edge with 14:58 remaining in the contest.
Blazers’ sophomore forward Kelly Callahan (Monson,
Mass.) nailed a jumper 23 seconds later to get Elms back
to within four, but that’s as close as they would get.
The Lynx used a 10-2 run to establish a 12-point cushion of 43-31
with 8:11 to go in the game, and extended that lead to 15 points
when Caira put in a layup following her own missed shot at the 2:52
mark.
A pair of free throws by Hailee Lowe (Hamilton,
Mass.) with 2:04 remaining gave Lesley its largest lead of
the contest (16) at 53-37 before Elms scored 10 of the final 12
points of the game when Condon delivered a hoop down low and
swished the ensuing foul shot to complete the three-point play and
then drained a three-pointer. Callahan and senior guard
Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center, Conn.) each added
a bucket to highlight Elms’ final run of the contest.
In the opening frame, Lesley opened up a 15-3 lead over the first
7:48 before Elms scored 16 of the next 20 points on the strength of
four points each from Condon, Dunnack and freshman guard
Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.), and two each from
Callahan and senior forward Erin Hutchinson (Groton,
Mass.) to even the game at 19-19.
The Lynx scored four straight points but Elms capitalized on
Lesley’s fouling, as Talmadge and Dunnack nailed two free
throws each to tie the score at 23-23 heading into the
intermission.
Dunnack finished with 10 points and three steals, while Hutchinson
snagged a team-high 11 boards and added three steals in the losing
effort.
Lowe finished with 15 points, while Wechsler added 13 points to
help pace the Lesley offense. Caira and Lowe also swatted three
shots apiece in the winning effort.
Elms returns to conference action on Saturday, Jan. 30 when it
hosts Becker College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Picknelly
Arena.
