CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior
forward Jessica Jurkowski (Belchertown, Mass.) and
freshman guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.)
netted 12 point apiece to help secure the Blazers’ 56-41
victory over Bay Path College in Tuesday evening’s New
England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s basketball game
at Picknelly Arena.
With the win, Elms improves to 3-8 overall, 2-0 in league action,
while Bay Path slides to 3-7 on the season, 0-2 in conference
play.
Trailing 23-21 at halftime, Elms galloped to a 14-point, 41-27
lead halfway through the second frame behind eight points from
senior guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center,
Conn.), including a pair of three-pointers, seven points
from Normandie, three from Jurkowski and two from sophomore guard
Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) to highlight a
20-4 run.
The Blazers maintained a double-digit cushion and used a 10-0 run
with the score set at 44-33 to secure a 21-point advantage, its
largest of the contest, with 2:47 remaining in the game.
The Wildcats responded with eight unanswered points to cut the
lead to 13 points with 1:22 remaining (54-41), before sophomore
forward Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) converted a
layup with time winding down to secure the 15-point victory.
Dunnack dropped in 10 points in the winning effort, while
Jurkowski finished with a team-best eight rebounds and added three
steals. Condon and Normandie added four steals each in the
game.
Sophomore point guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham,
Mass.) handed out five helpers in the squad’s
second-straight win.
After Elms took a 12-6 lead with 12:38 to go in the opening
period, Bay Path scored nine of the next 12 points to send the game
into a deadlock at 15-15, with 8:45 to go in the first half. An 8-1
run gave the Wildcats a 23-16 lead at the 6:19 mark, but the
Blazers rallied for five straight points to end the half, giving
Bay Path a narrow lead at 23-21.
For Bay Path, Jessica Hunt (Madison, Conn.)
finished with 12 points and 12 boards to lead the Wildcats.
Brittney Alexander (Enfield, Conn.) was solid off
the bench, scoring nine points in the losing effort.
The Blazers return to NECC action on Thursday, Jan. 14 at Daniel
Webster. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Nashua, N.H.
