Women’s Basketball Outlasted By Becker, 57-50
LEICESTER, Mass. – Elms College sophomore
point guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.)
netted a team-high 14 points, but Becker College held on for a
57-50 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon’s New
England Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game in
Leicester, Mass.
With the loss, Elms falls to 3-10 on the season, 2-2 in league
play, while Becker improves to 2-10 overall, 2-1 in NECC
action.
Trailing 25-16 at halftime, Elms withstood a 9-6 run that gave the
Hawks a 34-22 lead with 13:50 to go in the contest. A pair of free
throws and a layup from Talmadge sparked a 9-0 run by the Blazers.
Freshman guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.)
swished a trio of free throws and senior forward Jessica
Jurkowski (Belchertown, Mass.) delivered a basket in the
lane to bring Elms to within three at 34-31 at the 9:25 mark.
Talmadge and senior guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center,
Conn.) each nailed a trey to cut Elms’ deficit to
two at 39-37 with 6:44 to go in the contest before Becker scored 10
of the next 14 points to take a 49-41 lead with 3:08 left.
The Blazers answered with a 7-3 run of their own, capped by a
layup from senior forward Erin Hutchinson (Groton,
Mass.) to narrow the Hawks’ lead to four at 52-48 at
the 1:11 mark.
Becker’s Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, Mass.)
nailed four consecutive free throws to put the Hawks up eight at
56-48 with 45 ticks remaining. Normandie converted a layup to bring
Elms back to within six at 56-50 with 34 seconds remaining before
Catherine Millette (Columbia, Conn.) sank a final
free throw with four seconds left to secure the 57-50 victory.
In the opening frame, the sides played to a 12-12 tie at the 6:35
mark, before Becker scored 13 of the final 17 points of the period
to take a 25-16 lead into the break.
Dunnack and Talmadge finished with 11 points each, while
Hutchinson hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. Talmadge delivered
nine boards and four assists, while Jurkowski grabbed eight boards
in the losing effort.
Becker’s Courtney Fiske (Westfield, Mass.)
tied with Talmadge as the game’s leading scorer with 14
points, while Katelyn Cavanaugh (Belchertown,
Mass.) and Heidi Miller (Sanbornton,
N.H.) added 11 and 10 points respectively. Tibbetts and
Fiske each finished with four assists, while Miller snagged a
team-best eight rebounds in the win.
Elms returns to NECC action on Thursday, Jan. 21 when it hosts
Newbury College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
