WESTFIELD, Mass. – Elms College sophomore point
guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted a
team-high 17 points, but Westfield State College’s
Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, Mass.) poured in a
game-best 23 points and added 14 rebounds to help pace the Owls to
a 61-46 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon’s
non-conference women’s basketball game at the Woodward
Center.
With the loss, Elms falls to 1-4 on the season, while Westfield
State improves to 5-3 overall.
Trailing 53-44 with 2:37 left in the contest, Elms pulled to
within seven when senior guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield
Center, Conn.) delivered a pair of free throws to bring
the score to 53-46. Westfield State iced the game with an 8-0 run
that saw the Owls convert on 4 of 6 from the stripe during the
stretch.
After playing a close first period, Westfield took a 27-22 lead
into halftime before stringing together a 13-6 run to post a
12-point lead at the 16:34 mark. The Owls led by as many as 16
points (11:58) before the Blazers were able to cut their deficit to
seven with 2:30 left in the game.
Elms senior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, Mass.)
finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while freshman guard
Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) added 10 rebounds
in the losing effort.
Talmadge was 4 for 7 from three-point range and connected on 3 of
4 from the free throw line.
The Owls received 13 points from Christal Bello (West
Boylston, Mass.) and 10 points from Cassy Jouannet
(Conway, Mass.) to help pace Westfield to the 15-point
victory.
The Blazers return to action at Picknelly Arena on Wednesday, Dec.
9 when they host Nichols College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
