NASHUA, N.H. – Elms College freshman guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) led three Blazers in double figures with 14 points, including 12 in the opening frame, but Daniel Webster College’s Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) erupted for a career high 29 points to help pace the Eagles to a 60-42 victory in Thursday evening’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s basketball game.

With the loss, Elms falls to 3-9 on the season, 2-1 in league action, while Daniel Webster improves to 8-3 overall, 3-0 in conference play.

Elms jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 3:50 thanks to layups by Normandie, senior forward Jessica Jurkowski (Belchertown, Mass.) and a pair of free throws by senior guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center, Conn.). The Eagles answered to tie the game at 6-6, and responded to three more brief runs by the Blazers to even the contest at 17-17 with 3:25 remaining in the opening half.

Chagan converted a pair of layups and Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.) drained a three-pointer to give Daniel Webster a 24-17 advantage. Normandie scored a pair baskets in the paint to bring Elms to within three at 24-21, before a free throw and a layup by Chagan with 23 seconds to go in the frame gave the Eagles a 27-21 lead at the break.

Following the intermission, Daniel Webster scored 10 of the next 15 points to post an 11-point 37-26 lead and then used a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 16 points at 44-28 with 10:10 remaining in the contest.

Trailing 48-34, Dunnack swished a pair from the charity stripe and sophomore point guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.) executed a layup to bring Elms to within 10 at 48-38 with 5:57 left in the stanza. From there, Daniel Webster scored nine consecutive points to post its largest lead of the game at 57-38 with 2:09 to go and ended the game with an 18-point 60-42 victory.

Jurkowski finished with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Dunnack added 10 points in the losing effort.

Bosques netted 18 points and hauled in 12 rebounds, tying Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) for the game-high in the category.

Elms returns to NECC action on Saturday, Jan. 16 with a 1:00 p.m. road contest at Becker College.
