NORTON, Mass. – Elms College senior forward
Amanda Brogna (Oxford, Mass.) collected a team-high 15 points and
10 rebounds but Husson University had four players in double
figures to help pace the Eagles to a 80-59 victory over the Blazers
in Sunday afternoon’s women’s basketball contest at the
Wheaton College New Year’s Tournament.
With the loss, Elms falls to 1-8 on the season while Husson
improves to 3-6 overall.
Husson soared to an early 19-6 lead in the opening eight minutes
before an 11-1 run, sparked by a three-pointer from sophomore point
guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.), a pair
of buckets by sophomore guard Katie Condon (Sandy Hook,
Conn.) and one each from Talmadge and freshman guard
Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) pulled the Blazers
to within three at 20-17 with 7:24 remaining in the opening
stanza.
Trailing 23-17 at the 6:06 mark, senior forward Erin
Hutchinson (Groton, Mass.) drained a pair of free throws
to get Elms back to within four at 23-19, but Husson scored 17 of
the final 19 points of the period to post a 40-22 advantage at
intermission.
The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead and took a 47-31 lead
with 17:53 left in the contest before Elms’ senior guard
Jessica Jurkowski (Belchertown, Mass.) sank a
jumper, Brogna converted a layup and Normandie swished a trey to
pull the Blazers to within nine at 47-38 at the 16:07 mark.
The sides traded a pair of baskets to keep Elms’ deficit at
nine with 13:43 remaining in the game and the Blazers could get no
closer.
Leading 62-49 with 7:45 left, Husson maintained at least a
13-point cushion and led by as many as 22 (78-56) at the 1:41
mark.
Talmadge and Normandie finished with 13 points apiece to round out
the Blazers’ trio of players to record double-digit outputs,
while Condon added eight points off the bench in the losing
effort.
Husson’s Noelle Lincoln (Dixmont, Maine)
finished 4 of 7 from three-point land and 5 of 7 from the stripe to
register a game-high 19 points, while Amanda Gifford (Lee,
Maine) dropped in 14 points and handed out five helpers in
the contest.
Shelby Bradford (Lee, Maine) and Brianna
Hanscom (Mattawamkeag, Maine) netted 13 and 12 points
respectively, while Bradford hauled in a team-high eight boards and
contributed four steals in the winning effort.
For her efforts, Talmadge was named to the all-tournament team.
Elms will open New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on
Saturday, Jan. 9 at Newbury College. Game-time is slated for 12:00
p.m. in Brookline, Mass.
