NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Elms College freshman
guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) drained a
game-high 20 points and senior forward Amanda Brogna
(Oxford, Mass.) notched a double-double with 12 points and
11 rebounds, but Smith College was able to post a 57-44 victory
over the Blazers in Tuesday evening’s non-conference
women’s basketball game.
With the loss, Elms falls to 1-2 on the season, while Smith
improves to 2-1 overall.
Both teams struggled in the first period of action, as the sides
played to a 10-10 deadlock with six minutes remaining in the half.
Smith then closed out the half by going on a 14-9 run to post a
24-19 lead at the intermission.
Elms surged back in the second half, 10 of the first 17 points of
the frame to pull to within two at 31-29, capped by a Normandie
jumper with 10:15 left in the contest. However, that’s as
close as the Blazers would get, as the Pioneers outscored Elms
26-15 over the final 9:45 to seal the victory.
Blazers’ sophomore point guard Carolyn Talmadge
(Wilbraham, Mass.) netted seven points, while Normandie
cashed in for 16 of her 20 points in the second half and was 4 of 4
from the stripe in the losing effort.
Smith was led by freshmen Daron Dean (Brush Prairie,
Wash.) and Elizabeth Dutton (Deering,
N.H.) who scored 12 and 11 respectively.
The Pioneers also received a 10-rebound effort from senior
Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, N.J.).
Smith took advantage of Blazers’ foul trouble, shooting an
impressive 80 percent from the free throw line (24-30), including
an 86.4 percent mark in the second half.
Elms returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 1 when it travels to
Western New England College (WNEC). Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
