Field Hockey Falls to Vassar College, 4-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore net-minder Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) registered 21 saves but Vassar College used three first half scores and two goals by Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, Ill.) to help lift the Brewers to a 4-0 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms moves to 1-7 overall, while Vassar improves to 4-2 on the season.

In the opening period, Wiebe put Vassar ahead, 1-0 when she scored on a rebounded shot in the 13th minute of play. Dara Davis (Guilford, Conn.) extended the lead to 2-0 at the 17:05 mark when she scored in the left corner of the net after receiving a pass from Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, Calif.).

The Brewers' third goal of the contest came at the 26:46 mark when Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, Mass.) crossed the ball to Tina Caso (Carmel, N.Y.) who deposited the ball in the cage to set the score at 3-0 heading into halftime.

In the 66th minute of action, Wiebe capped the scoring with a goal in the top left corner of the net following a pass from Caso to give Vassar a 4-0 win.

Davis had eight shots on goal and Wiebe had five to highlight the Brewers' offensive attack.

Alvino collected 11 saves in the first stanza and 10 saves in the second to finish with 21 stops in the game.

Elms hosts Westfield State University on Thursday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. in non-conference play at Leary Field.
