Field Hockey falls to Smith College, 2-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) made 18 saves and was tremendous between the pipes, but Smith College's Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya) scored what proved to be the game-winner as the Pioneers notched a 2-0 victory in Tuesday evening's non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms moves to 1-5 on the season, while Smith improves to 5-0 on the season.

Smith controlled pace of play from start to finish but the Blazers received stellar defensive effort anchored by Alvino's nine saves in each period.

The Pioneers broke through in the 24th minute of play when Odhiambo deposited a pass from Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich.) into the back of the cage to set the score at 1-0.

Smith, which outshot Elms 35-1, added its final marker in the 70th minute of play when Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn.) corralled a loose ball off a shot by Stein and fired the ball into the back of the net to set the final score at 2-0.

Pioneers' goalkeeper Abbey Petronzio (Beverly, Mass.) turned in a shutout performance for her fifth win of the season.

Elms returns to action on Thursday, September 19 when the Blazers travel to Clark University for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
