Yowell Scores Three as Second Half Surge Paces Women’s Soccer Past Wheelock College, 7-0

BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) scored three second half goals and the Blazers netted seven during a 21-minute span in the second period to post a 7-0 victory over Wheelock College in Wednesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer game at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass.

With the win, Elms improves to 3-8-1 overall, 2-0-1 in conference play, while Wheelock falls to 3-10-0 overall, 1-2-0 in NECC action.

After playing to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes of action, Elms, which outshot Wheelock 14-1 in the first period, erupted for seven goals in a 21 minute span to post a 7-0 victory over the Wildcats. Wednesday's 7-0 win at Winsor Field was the highest margin of victory for the Blazers since a 7-0 triumph over the Wildcats on Oct. 26 last season at Leary Field.

Yowell, who scored three goals in the contest, got the scoring started at the 50:04 mark and then assisted on a pair of goals by freshman defender Emily Brown (Agawam, Mass.) in the 60th and 66th minutes to give Elms a 3-0 lead.

Yowell tallied her second strike just 1:32 later, and after a goal that glanced off the keeper's hands by freshman midfielder Michelle Rossignol (Manchester, Conn.), Yowell collected a rebound off her own shot and found the back of the net for the third time to give the Blazers a 6-0 advantage in the 70th minute of action.

Elms' junior defender Ally Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) capped the scoring with a long shot from 25 yards out at the 71:28 mark to complete the Blazers' 7-0 win.

Yowell's three scores give her a team-high nine for the season, while Brown's first score was the first of her collegiate career. Rossignol's marker was also her first collegiate goal.

Yowell played the first 25:41 between the pipes and didn't register a save, while junior net-minder Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) played the final 19:19 of the first half and also didn't need to make a save.

Elms' freshman goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) made three saves in 45 minutes of second half action, turning away two shots by the Wildcats' Alyssa Collier (Trappe, Pa.) and one by Madeline Domingo (Newington, Conn.).

Wheelock starting goalkeeper Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, Mass.) played 84 minutes and made 14 saves in the losing effort.

Elms returns to NECC play on Saturday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Bay Path College at 12:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
