Women’s Soccer Falls to Westfield State University, 4-1

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) registered 13 saves and freshman forward Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) added her third goal of the season, but Westfield State University used a goal and two assists from Kayley Miller (Ludlow, Mass.) to help spark a 4-1 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms slides to 1-4-0 on the season, while Westfield State improves to 5-0-1 overall.

Miller got the scoring started for Westfield State in the 14th minute of play when she pounded a loose ball into the far left corner of the net from 10 yards out to give the Owls a quick 1-0 lead.

Colie Sambrook (Naugatuck, Conn.), who entered as a substitute with 15 minutes left to play in the opening period, made an immediate impact when she found the back of the net on a loose ball in front of the goal following two shot attempts on a corner kick service to give Westfield State a 2-0 cushion at intermission.

Miller then set up two well-executed scores separated by just three minutes, as Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, Mass.) and Ashleigh Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass.) were able to capitalize on two perfectly placed feeds from Miller to lift the advantage to 4-0.

Yowell put the Blazers on the board when she corralled a loose ball from just beyond the 18-yard box and fired a laser to the far left post to give Elms its lone goal of the contest in the 80th minute of action.

The Owls fired 18 shots on target and limited Elms to just two shots on goal. Westfield State also won the corner kick battle, 11-1.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 19 when it travels to Smith College for a 4:00 p.m. contest against the Pioneers.
