Women’s Soccer Notches First Win of the Season, 3-2 Over Mount Holyoke College

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.  – Elms College battled back from a one-goal deficit, scoring three straight as  the Blazers posted a 3-2 victory over Mount Holyoke College in Thursday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at the MHC Soccer Field in South Hadley, Mass.

With the win, Elms earns its first victory of the 2012 season and improves to 1-2 overall, while Mount Holyoke falls to 0-1-1 on the season.

With the scored locked at 1-1 after 45 minutes of action, Elms forged ahead three minutes into the second stanza when freshman forward Hannah Spring (South Hadley, Mass.) took a feed from classmate Melissa Welch (Westfield, Mass.) and played the ball past Lyons' goalkeeper Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn.) to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.

Welch then ended up on the scoring end for Elms as she blasted a breakaway goal into the net at the 66:45 mark to extend the Blazers' cushion to 3-1.

Mount Holyoke was able to cut the deficit to one (3-2) in the 87th minute when Hannah Yee (Amherst, Mass.) volleyed in a cross from Kiana Lussier (South Hadley, Mass.) to pull the Lyons to within one, but it proved too little, too late as Elms' defense was able to help secure the victory.

The Lyons opened the game's scoring when Mallory Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H.) sent a long shot in from outside the box before Elms answered with less than a minute to play in the first half when freshman midfielder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) scored off her own rebound, which had initially been a kick save by Randall.

For the game, Mount Holyoke held the advantage in shots (18-11), while the Blazers had the edge in corner kicks (4-2).

Blazers' junior goalkeeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) posted six saves in goal before giving way to freshman keeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.), who had three stops in the victory.

For the Lyons, Randall had six stops.

Elms returns to non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 8 when it hosts MCLA in its home opener at 2:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
