Yowell's Two Strikes Lift Women's Soccer Past Southern Vermont College, 2-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in first half action to propel the Blazers to a 2-0 victory over Southern Vermont College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms improves to 2-6-1 on the season, 1-1-0 in NECC action, while Southern Vermont slips to 6-3-1 overall, 0-2-0 in league play.

Yowell put Elms ahead early netting the first of her two goals in the second minute of play, launching ball into the top upper right corner of the net to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.

Elms, which outshot Southern Vermont 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes, added its second tally of the half when Yowell found the back of the net in the 32nd minute, this time in the upper left hand corner, setting the score at 2-0 at halftime.

The Blazers owned an 8-1 shot advantage in the second half, but Yowell's two first half scores were the only goals of the game as Elms secured the 2-0 win.

Mountaineers' goalkeeper Catrina Cecchini (Montville, Conn.) made four of the team's six saves in the game, while Elms' net-minder Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) turned away all three shots on goal she faced to earn the shutout win – the first of her collegiate career.

Yowell and sophomore midfielder Carmen Marino (Granby, Mass.) had three shots on goal each for Elms in the winning effort.

Elms is back to non-conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when it hosts Wesleyan University (Conn.) at 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
