Women’s Soccer Falls at Western New England University, 4-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Elms College sophomore midfielder Gina DiGiovanni (Springfield, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) each netted a first half goal and the game was tied at 2-2 at intermission, but Western New England University received two second half scores to help spark the Golden Bears to a 4-2 victory over the Blazers in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game in Springfield, Mass.

With the loss, Elms falls to 1-6-1 on the season, while Western New England improves to 5-5-1 overall.

Western New England earned the first goal of the game when Bonnie Bousquet (Southbridge, Mass.) scored on a pass from Tayler Mazurski (Wolcott, Conn.) just 4:22 into the contest giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.

DiGiovanni scored the equalizer 14 minutes later when she took a feed from sophomore midfielder Carmen Marino (Granby, Mass.) and found the back of the net to set the score at 1-1 with less than 20 minutes gone by in the game.

The Blazers took the lead in the 37th minute of action when Yowell netted her fourth goal of the 2012 campaign using an assist from senior defender Leah Spring (South Hadley, Mass.) to give Elms a 2-1 lead. Three minutes later, Sarah Marois (Waterford, N.Y.) scored for the Golden Bears to make it a 2-2 game at intermission.

Jocelyn Rose (Clinton, Conn.) scored the go-ahead goal for Western New England at the 66:42 mark and Mazurski and Bousquet switched roles on the final score of the game as Mazurski scored on an assist by Bousquet to cap the Golden Bears' 4-2 victory.

Elms' junior goalkeeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) made eight saves in the losing effort including six in the first 45 minutes of play while Yowell accounted for two of the team's three shots on net.

Elms will host Southern Vermont College on Saturday, September 29 in its New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) home opener at 1:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
