Men’s Volleyball Falls To Mount Olive College, York College

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Elms College men's volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses in day one action of the York College Men's Volleyball Classic on Friday evening in Jamaica, N.Y.

Elms lost its first contest 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-17) to Mount Olive College before falling 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 25-16, 15-25, 15-8) in the nightcap.

Elms is now 9-13 overall.

In the Blazers' first contest, junior opposite hitter Michael Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) downed a team-high seven kills on 10 swings with just one misfire in addition to adding three digs, a service ace and an assisted block.

Freshman setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 15 assists, notched three digs and served up an ace, while junior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) and freshman middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) collected six digs apiece in the losing effort.

In the nightcap, Elms' junior middle hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) floored a team-best 16 kills and Rainey added nine as host York outlasted the Blazers for a 3-2 victory.

Cameron added a team-high 10 digs in the losing effort, while Rainey and junior outside hitter Michael Martin (Enfield, Conn.) added seven each. Lebron handed out 35 of the team's 36 assists in the loss.

With the score set at 7-7 in the fifth set, York rallied for six straight points and posted a 13-7 lead. A kill by Cameron ended the surge, but a kill by Alex Niles (St. Georges, Grenada) and a service ace from Ahmed Helmi (Cairo, Egypt) sealed the hard-fought victory.

Helmi finished with a match-high 25 kills, while Terrance Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled a contest-best 16 digs. Kenan Kajtezovic (Velkaklavusa, Bosnia) directed the attack with 40 assists.

Elms returns to York Men's Volleyball Classic Action on Saturday, March 12 when it takes on the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) at 1:00 p.m. before squaring off against New Jersey City University at 3:00 p.m.
