Men’s Volleyball Falls To No. 8 MIT, 3-0

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Elms College sophomore outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) downed a team-high eight kills, but No. 8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s Matt Hohenberger (St. Louis, Mo.) floored a match-high 10 kills to lift the Engineers to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) sweep of the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's men's volleyball match at the SUNY New Paltz Tournament.

With the loss, Elms falls to 1-3 on the season, while MIT improves to 7-0 overall.

In the opening set, the sides played to a 21-21 tie before Hohenberger downed two kills and Evan Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) closed out the set with a kill to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, MIT cruised to a 23-11 lead before Vatterott smashed a kill and Hohenberger added a solo block to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead in the contest.

Elms led for much of the third frame before MIT used a 7-3 run to break an 18-18 tie and post a 25-21 victory in the stanza and preserve the sweep for the Engineers.

Freshman middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) added seven kills on 16 swings with two errors for a .312 hitting percentage, while freshman setter Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) dished out a team-high 22 assists.

Freshman libero Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added six digs, while junior outside hitter Michael Martin (Enfield, Conn.) contributed five digs in the losing effort. Sophomore middle hitter Wilfrido Fermin (Bronx, N.Y.) was stellar at the net notching four total blocks.

Patrick Vatterott (St. Louis, Mo.) added nine kills, while Tim Lee (Natick, Mass.) dished out 33 assists in the winning effort, while Lee and Caine Jette (Haiku, Hawaii) added six digs each.

Elms returns to SUNY New Paltz Tournament action Sunday, Jan. 23 with a 9:00 a.m. contest against host SUNY New Paltz, followed by a 12:00 p.m. contest against Baruch College.
