Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Past Daniel Webster College, Regis College

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman middle blocker Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) smashed a total of 26 kills to help lead the Blazers to a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Daniel Webster College and Regis College in Saturday afternoon's men's volleyball tri-match at Picknelly Arena.

Elms downed Daniel Webster 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 28-26) in the opening match, and recorded a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-10) win over Regis in the nightcap. The Eagles swept the Pride, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17) in the neutral match.

Following Saturday's action Elms stands at 6-7 overall, 5-3 in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division, and 3-1 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play. Daniel Webster moves to 3-4 overall, 4-1 in NECVA action and 3-1 in NECC play, while Regis falls to 0-7 on the season, 0-7 in NECVA action.

Elms 3, Daniel Webster 0

With the score knotted at 24-24 in the third set and Elms holding a 2-0 lead in the match, Rainey smashed his 13th kill of the contest to put the Blazers ahead 25-24. An Elms service error, followed by a Daniel Webster service miscue set the score at 26-25 in favor of the Blazers, before a kill by Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) evened the frame at 26-26. Another Eagles service error and an ace from freshman setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) allowed Elms the claim the set 28-26 and win the match.

Lebron paced Elms with a match-high 29 assists, while junior outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) hit at a team-best .308 clip for the match, flooring 12 kills on 26 swings with just 4 errors.

Junior outside hitter Michael Martin (Enfield, Conn.) added a match-high 12 digs, while Rainey finished with 10. Acosta added two solo blocks and three assisted blocks, while senior defensive specialist Joshua Chagnon (Loudon, N.H.) contributed a solo block and two assisted blocks.

The Eagles were led by Shannon and Joe Walz (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who downed 13 and 12 kills respectively. Kyle Clement (Weymouth, Mass.) dished out a team-high 26 assists, while Shannon led the team with eight digs.

Daniel Webster 3, Regis 0

Clement directed an even offensive attack against Regis, handing out 20 helpers, while Walz, Travis Crockett (Tenants Harbor, Maine) and Justin Masse (Hudson, N.Y.) drilled a match-best five kills apiece.

The three each delivered six digs, while Masse and Walz registered three assisted blocks each.

Regis' Dan Berdichevsky (Wayland, Mass.) collected a team-high four kills and a team-best eight digs, while Andrew Carroll (Natick, Mass.) added 11 assists in the losing effort.

Elms 3, Regis 0

Rainey led a high-powered Elms attack against the Pride, connecting for 13 kills for the second time in as many matches. Acosta and junior outside hitter Michael Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) added six kills each to lead help the Blazers hit .324 as a team as Acosta finished with a .500 mark (6K, 0E, 12TA), Rainey a .348 clip (13K, 5E, 23TA) and Martin a .300 tally (3K, 0E, 10TA).

Lebron dished out 29 assists and registered five service aces, while Martin led all players with 11 digs in the winning effort. Acosta added seven digs, while Chagnon delivered four kills including the match-winner with a 24-10 lead in the third set.

Berderchevski and Chris Tran (East Boston, Mass.) led Regis in defeat with five kills each, while Carroll dished out a team-high 14 assists.

Elms returns to NECC and NECVA New England Division action on Monday, Feb. 14 when it travels to Lesley University for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
