Men’s Volleyball Earns Split At Wentworth Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College freshman middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) downed 16 total kills to help the Blazers earn a split during Saturday afternoon's men's volleyball tri-match against Wentworth Institute of Technology and Southern Vermont College, hosted by the Leopards in Boston, Mass.

Elms lost to Wentworth, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-22) before sweeping Southern Vermont 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) to improve to 8-8 overall, 7-4 in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division and 5-1 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play.

Wentworth improves to 15-6 overall, 8-3 in NECVA action, while Southern Vermont slips to 2-12 on the season, 2-8 in NECVA play and 1-4 in NECC action.

Wentworth 3, Elms 0

Against Wentworth, Rainey, junior outside hitter Michael Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) and junior middle hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) each registered six kills in the losing effort.

Acosta added five blocks, while freshman setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had 20 assists and 14 digs.  Junior outside hitter Michael Martin (Enfield, Conn.) led the defense with 21 digs.

Elms 3, Southern Vermont 0

The Blazers took the first set against the Mountaineers 25-18 after scoring five straight points to extend a 19-16 lead to 24-16.

Elms posted leads of 12-5 and 18-10 in the second frame before Southern Vermont turned a 23-13 deficit into a slim two-point 24-22 lead for the Blazers using a 9-1 run.  From there, a Mountaineers attacking error gave Elms a 25-22 win in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match. 

Elms closed out the contest with a 25-16 win on the strength of a 13-2 run to stake a commanding 16-4 lead.

Rainey had 10 kills in the match, while Kleckner had seven kills and 13 digs. Lebron handed out 28 assists in the winning effort.

Elms returns to NECVA New England action on Monday, Feb. 21 when it travels to Endicott College for a 4:00 p.m. contest in Beverly, Mass.
