Three First Half Goals Power Women’s Soccer Past Southern Vermont College, 4-0

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Elms College sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) netted two goals to help the Blazers secure a 4-0 victory over Southern Vermont College in Wednesday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer game in Bennington, Vt.

With the win, Elms improves to 5-4-3 overall, 2-1-2 in conference play, while Southern Vermont falls to 3-7 overall, 2-3 in NECC action.

Elms' attack was ignited in the ninth minute of play when senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) delivered a well-placed cross to the foot of Gorneault who finished off the play with her seventh goal of the season to give Elms a 1-0 lead.

With just over 10 minutes to play in the first period, Gorneault found the back of the net again, giving the Blazers a 2-0 edge before freshman forward Sevonnah LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) struck at the 41:27 mark to give Elms a commanding 3-0 advantage at intermission.

Elms' sophomore midfielder Victoria Cebula (Granby, Mass.) capped the victory with her first goal of the season in the 71st minute when she boomed the ball from 40 yards out that bounced over the keeper's head to complete the 4-0 victory.

Starting goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) played the first 71 minutes and made two saves to earn the victory as the Blazers drilled 17 shots on target compared to two from the Mountaineers.

Southern Vermont keeper Catrina Ceccini (Montville, Conn.) made 13 saves in the losing effort.

Elms returns to league play on Saturday, Oct. 15 when it travels to Leicester, Mass. for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with Becker College.
