Alvarado Nets Two in 3-3 Double Overtime Draw with Westfield State University

Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Elms College senior defender Amanda Alvarado (Springfield, Mass.) netted the equalizer in the 88th minute and finished with two goals to help the Blazers rally to a 3-3 draw with Westfield State University in Tuesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at Alumni Field.

With the tie, Elms moves to 0-1-1 on the season, while Westfield State moves to 4-1-1 overall.

Leading 2-1 at intermission, Westfield State added to its lead in the 50th minute when Ashleigh Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass.) launched her third goal of the contest into the upper right corner of the net to give the Owls a comfortable 3-1 lead.

Elms answered two minutes later when Alvarado drilled a shot just inside the left post from the 18-yard box taking advantage of a pass from sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) to pull the Blazers to within one at 3-2. Gorneault registered two assists in the contest.

The Owls clung to its one-goal lead until the 87:50 mark when Alvarado struck again, this time with an unassisted goal to knot the game at 3-3 and force an overtime period.

In the first overtime, neither team found an offensive rhythm which forced a second overtime stanza.

The Owls fired three shots on target in the second period of extra time, but Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) was tremendous, making three stops in the frame en route to an 18-save performance.

Alvarado, senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.), who scored the Blazers' goal in the first half, and freshman midfielder Katherine Hunt (Enfield, Conn.) recorded two shots on goal apiece in the tie.

Chretien finished with a hat trick, while Leann Rivard (Chicopee, Mass.) and Kayley Miller (Ludlow, Mass.) registered an assist each in the tie.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when it travels to Vassar College for a non-league game at 2:00 p.m.
