Women’s Soccer Falls to MCLA in Double Overtime, 2-1

Box Score

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Elms College junior midfielder Leah Spring (South Hadley, Mass.) scored the equalizing goal in the 73rd minute but Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' (MCLA) Brianna Bresett (Adams, Mass.) struck for the game-winner four minutes into the second overtime period to lift the Trailblazers to a 2-1 victory in Thursday evening's non-conference women's soccer game.

With the loss, Elms slips to 3-4-3 overall, while MCLA improves to 4-6-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first period that saw both sides register eight shots, Brianna Dandurant (Amesbury, Mass.) put MCLA on the board when she took a pass over the top from Rachel Niddrie (Worcester, Mass.) and then beat the keeper to give the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute of action.

Elms rallied in the 73rd minute when senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) broke free in the box and was taken down and subsequently awarded a penalty kick. Spring took the kick and converted knotting the game at 1-1 with just over 15 minutes left in regulation.

The Blazers received a second penalty kick with three minutes remaining in regulation but Spring was stonewalled by MCLA goalkeeper Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Elms had a chance on a loose ball on a corner kick service in the opening overtime frame but could not capitalize.

The Trailblazers drove in the game winner in the 103rd minute when Lauren Ford (Voorheesville, N.Y.) took a direct kick and sent it into the box where Bresett beat Elms net-minder Ashley LaFountain (Springfield, Mass.) to seal the win.

Elms' sophomore starting goalkeeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) made eight saves and earned a no-decision as LaFountain suffered the loss.

Wehner recorded 13 saves to help MCLA to victory.

Elms returns to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 8 when it hosts Regis College at 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
