Goodchild Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Smith College, 1-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. –
Elms College sophomore forward Christina Goodchild (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the game's only goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first half to propel the Blazers to a 1-0 victory over Smith College in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win Elms improves to 2-2-1 on the season, while Smith slips to 1-4 overall.

After 43 minutes of scoreless soccer, Elms struck with 14 ticks remaining In the first half when sophomore Allyson Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) launched a corner kick across the box to Goodchild, who played the ball into the back of the net to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.

Trailing 1-0, Smith outshot Elms 7-2 in the final 45 minutes but Blazers' sophomore net-minder Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) turned away three shots en route to nine total saves to help keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard and preserve the shutout.

Elms senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) placed a pair of shots on target, while freshman forward Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.), senior defender Brianna Valente (Springfield, Mass.), and Goodchild each added a shot on goal.

Smith goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla.) batted away four shots in the losing effort, while Jenna BiCierro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) fired two shots on net.

Elms kicks off New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play on Saturday, Sept. 24 when it hosts Newbury College as part of homecoming weekend at Leary Field at 1:00 p.m.
