Field Hockey Preview: Bay Path

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey team will wrap up their 2014 regular season schedule with a New England Collegiate Conference road match at Bay Path College Saturday afternoon at 11:00 a.m.

The Blazers enter the match with a 5-13 overall record, and a 3-1 mark in the NECC for the second spot in the conference standings. Elms has won three of their last four matches, including conference wins against Regis (3-0), Daniel Webster (5-1), and Wheelock (4-1). In their last contest, the Blazers battled Johnson & Wales in a tough non-conference matchup, falling to the Wildcats 2-1.

Senior forward Emma Morgan (S. Kingstown, R.I.) has taken over as Elms' leading scorer with 16 points, recording team-highs in goals (6) and assists (4), ranking second in the conference in assists and fourth in goals. Senior forward Kayla Narey (S. Hadley, Mass.) has tallied 14 points with six goals, while senior forward Meghan Goodrow (Sunderland, Mass.), senior midfielder Imogen Leonard (Sharon, Mass.), and senior forward Kelly Martin (Enfield, Conn.) have each contributed two goals on the season. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) has been vital in goal for the Blazers, ranking in the top three among four goaltending categories. Alvino leads the NECC in save percentage with a .813 mark, while ranking second in goals against (47) and goals against average (2.62), and third in saves (204).

Bay Path College has struggled during the 2014 season to the tune of a 1-13 record, and a 1-3 conference mark. After dropping 13 straight matches to open the season, the Wildcats registered their first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Daniel Webster in a road match Monday afternoon. Bay Path has been held scoreless in 12 of their matches, and opponents have outscored the Wildcats, 62-8, during the season.

The Wildcats are led offensively by senior midfielder Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, Mass.) with a team-high seven points on two goals and three assists. Freshman forwards Casey LaMotte (Enfield, Conn.) and Nicole Schafer (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who have each netted a pair of goals on the season, while junior defender Elizabeth Deane (Agawam, Mass.) has tallied a goal and an assist.

Over the history of their matchup, the Blazers have edged the Wildcats in 11 career matchups, 8-3. Elms has won the last four matches against Bay Path, including a 1-0 victory during the 2013 campaign.
