CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey squad knotted up the match in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net in the second half as visiting Fitchburg State claimed a 2-1 victory over the Blazers in a non-conference match at Leary Field Tuesday night.

In the 15th minute of play, the Falcons drew first blood as sophomore forward Julia Pecoraro (Yarmouthport, Mass.) dribbled along the left goal line and fed a pass to the middle of the net, where sophomore forward Stephanie Stearns (Leominster, Mass.) knocked the loose ball past Elms junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.), to give Fitchburg State a 1-0 advantage.

The Blazers responded with 11:17 remaining in the first half as a loose ball trickled to the front of the Falcons goal on a scrum following an Elms corner, where Blazers senior forward Tatiana Frizzell (Brattleboro, Vt.) hunted the loose ball and fired a shot into the back of the net, knotting the game at 1-1. The game remained tied heading into the halftime break.

The Falcons converted the game-winner in the 60th minute, after moving the ball around on a corner attempt, when junior forward Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass.) misplayed a shot, but the stray attempt rolled over to Stearns, who netted the eventual winning goal for Fitchburg State.

The Falcons controlled the shot column, 25-6, during the contest, and had 15 penalty corners to the five for Elms. Alvino stopped a game-high nine shots for the Blazers, while Falcons junior goalkeeper Judith Valentin (Brockton, Mass.) made one save in the first half and senior Lucy Holewa (Londonberry, N.H.) earned the win with a second-half effort.

Elms moves to 2-12 overall, while Fitchburg State improves to 5-8 on the season. The Blazers will be back in action in a New England Collegiate Conference tilt against Regis at Leary Field Saturday afternoon. Faceoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. Fitchburg will travel to Western Connecticut State on Friday.
