Field Hockey Players Claims Prestigious Academic Awards

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Elms College junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Meghan Goodrow (Sunderland, Mass.) have been successful for the Blazers both on the field and in the classroom.

As a sophomore, Alvino registered the highest academic achievement of her sophmore class, recording a perfect 4.0, to earn the Monsignor Conlin Award, given to the student with the highest GPA of their class. Goodrow accomplished the same feat as a junior, earning the Monsignor Conaty award. The players were honored during Academic Convocation last week.

An Early Childhood Education major, Alvino has started all 11 games at goalkeeper for the Blazers (2-7) this season, ranking first in the New England Collegiate Conference in saves (158); second in save percentage (.818) and goals against average (3.02).

Goodrow, a Communication Science and Disorders major, has appeared in 10 games this season, tallying a goal and an assist. Meghan is second on the team in shots with 14, including six shots on goal.

The Elms field hockey squad returns to the field in a non-conference tilt against Wheaton (Mass.) at Leary Field Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The Blazers open their NECC conference schedule with a road trip to Becker College Saturday afternoon at 11:00 a.m.
