Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker in Double Overtime

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey squad grabbed an early 3-1 lead over the visiting AMCATS, but Anna Maria came back to tie the contest in the final seconds and deliver the game-winner in a double-overtime non-conference thriller at Leary Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Blazers broke a scoreless tie in the tenth minute of play as senior Jaclyn Soderquist (Enfield, Conn.) took a pass from junior Kristina Kopyscinski (Agawam, Mass.) and fired a shot past AMCATS junior goalie Mark Kate Breen, to give Elms a 1-0 lead.
With 9:49 to play in the first half, the Blazers extended their lead to 2-0 as senior forward Meghan Goodrow (Sunderland, Mass.) found Kopyscinski in the Anna Maria zone, where Kopyscinski fought through a scrum in front of the goal and placed a shot past Breen. Just over four minutes later, the AMCATS chipped into the Blazers lead as junior Kylie Dalbec netted the first of four goals on the day.
At the 28:33 mark of the second half, senior Imogen Leonard (Sharon, Mass.) worked her way through the midfield and delivered a crisp pass from ten yards inside AMCATS zone to Kopyscinski, who was sitting in front of the goal and tucked a shot into the back of the net, pushing the Blazers lead to 3-1. Dalbec netted her second goal of the game with an unassisted tally in the 57th minute of play, to cut the Elms advantage to 3-2.
As the clock wound under 10 seconds to play, AMCATS sophomore Ashley George found Dalbec, who beat Blazers junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.), to knot the game at 3-3 with seven seconds remaining. The goal made Dalbec Anna Maria's all-time leading scorer with 38 career goals.
The teams battled to a scoreless first overtime period with Alvino stopping seven shots in the period, sending the contest to a final period to decide the outcome. Dalbec put the seal on the game in the 91st minute, scoring off a pass from senior Nichole Lewis, to deal the Blazers a heart-breaking 4-3 defeat.
Anna Maria outshot Elms, 32-10, during the four-period thriller. Alvino stopped a game-high 18 shots, one shy of matching her season high, while Breen made three saves for the AMCATS.
The Blazers sit at 0-6 on the season, while Anna Maria moved to 3-5 overall. Elms will look to move into the win column against when they host Clark University at Leary Field Thursday evening. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
