CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey defeated visiting Wheelock College, 4-1, in a New England Collegiate Conference match at Leary Field Saturday afternoon.
With the game knotted in a scoreless tie with 15 minutes remaining, Elms College junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) made a pair of clutch, including a rocket off the stick of Wheelock junior defender Jen Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) on a penalty corner to keep the contest scoreless. As the clock ticked under a minute, senior forward Kelly Martin (Enfield, Conn.) played a loose ball to the front of the net, where senior forward Emma Morgan (S. Kingstown, R.I.) tucked a shot past Wildcats freshman goalkeeper Nicole Miranda (Westbrook, Maine), staking the Blazers to a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the 44th minute of play, the Blazers were awarded a penalty corner opportunity. On the ensuing attempt, senior forward Hannah O'Brien (Granby, Conn.) delivered the corner to senior defender Ashley Reid (Enfield, Conn.), who played a ball back to the near post for a one-timer by O'Brien, pushing the Elms lead to 2-0.
With 14:52 to play, the Blazers put the game away as junior defender Abby McNulty (Bedford, Mass.) ripped a shot on goal, but Miranda was unable to control the loose ball, which allowed senior forward Meghan Goodrow (Sunderland, Mass.) to swoop in a knock home the rebound.
Wheelock cracked the scoreboard with 2:59 to play as Alvino denied an initial shot from sophomore midfielder Emma Panto (Somers, Conn.), but freshman forward Katelyn Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) snuck a shot past Alvino, making it a 3-1 game. Elms delivered a final strike as senior forward Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) laced a shot past Miranda on breakaway from the top of the circle, sending the Blazers to a 4-1 victory.
The Blazers edged the Wildcats in shots, 19-10, during the contest. Alvino stopped five shots in the win, while Miranda made a game-high nine saves for Wheelock.
With the win, Elms improves to 5-12 on the year, and 3-1 in the NECC standings, while Wheelock dropped to 3-8 overall, and 2-1 in the NECC. The Blazers will look to continue their winning ways when they host Johnson & Wales in a non-conference match at Leary Field Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Wheelock is back in action when they host Daniel Webster on Tuesday night.
