Wheelock College Edges Field Hockey as Time Expires for 1-0 Victory

BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) recorded 10 saves but Wheelock College's Kayla Sharpe (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored a goal as time expired to lift the Wildcats to a thrilling, hard-fought victory over the Blazers in Saturday's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) field hockey game.

With the loss, Elms falls to 1-10 overall, 0-2 in NECC action, while Wheelock improves to 3-11 on the season, 2-1 in NECC play.

In a tightly contested first period, Wheelock held a slight 4-3 shot advantage over the Blazers, before the Wildcats notched 13 of the 18 shots in the second half to finish with a 17-8 lead in the category for the contest.

Eight of Bonavita's 10 saves came during the final 35 minutes of play before Wheelock was awarded a penalty corner with just 11 ticks remaining allowing Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) to take the stroke and find Sharpe who drilled the ball into the back of the cage giving the Wildcats a 1-0 victory.

Freshmen Ashley Reid (Enfield, Conn.) and Imogen Leonard (Sharon, Mass.) led the Blazers with two shots each, while Savvoulides finished with four shots to lead Wheelock.

Elms returns to NECC play on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when it travels to Weston, Mass. to take on Regis College at 6:00 p.m.
