Field Hockey Falls to Worcester State, 6-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) deflected 16 shots but Worcester State University used three scores each from Lindsey McGeary (Foxborough, Mas.) and Sarah Cozzens (Lancaster, Mass.) to lift the Lancers to a 6-0 win over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game at Coughlin Field.

With the loss, Elms begins its season 0-1 overall, while Worcester State improves to 2-0 on the season.

McGeary scored 1:53 into the game and then scored 18:07 later to give the Lancers an early 2-0 lead before Cozzens scored her first goal 1:01 after that to extend Worcester State's lead to 3-0.

McGeary then found the back of the cage for her third goal of the half at the 31:08 mark on a feed from Cozzens to lift the Lancers' advantage to 4-0 at intermission.

Cozzens added two more scoring strikes, one at the 49:02 mark and the other at 58:26 extended Worcester State's cushion to 6-0.

Yvonne Urbanowicz (Holyoke, Mass.) notched Elms' lone shot of the contest, while McGeary and Cozzens finished with seven and six shots respectively.

Bonavita (0-1) recorded eight stops in each half in the losing effort, while Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, Mass.) earned the win for the Lancers and improves to 2-0 on the season.

Elms is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when it travels to Rivier College for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
