CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Meghan Goodrow (Sunderland, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season, but NCAA Division II Mercy College used a pair of goals by Giana Magosin (West Atlantic City, N.J.) to help the Mavericks pull away to a 5-1 victory over the Blazers in Friday evening's non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms slips to 1-8 on the season, while Mercy earns its first victory of the 2011 season to improve to 1-10 overall.
Magosin put Mercy ahead early when she found the back of the cage on a feed in front by Danielle Jones (Shrewsbury, Mass.) at the 7:43 mark to give the Mavericks a 1-0 advantage. Elms responded ten minutes later when it earned a penalty corner opportunity. Freshman forward Ashleigh Lamoureux (Stafford Springs, Conn.) received the penalty stroke and tapped the ball to freshman midfield Imogen Leonard (Sharon, Mass.) who played it to Goodrow who rifled the ball into the cage, knotting the game at 1-1.
At the 24:13 mark of the first period, Mercy's Yolie Nyero (Carlisle, Pa.) intercepted a Blazers' pass and fired in the go ahead score lifting the Mavericks' lead to 2-1 which it held until intermission.
Mercy struck again in the 53rd minute when Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y.) found the back of the cage giving the Mavericks a 3-1 cushion.
Magosin scored her second goal of the contest with an assist from Andrea Licostie (Lake Grove, N.Y.) in the 58th minute, before Licostie added a scoring strike of her own at the 65:02 mark to help the Mavericks seal a 5-1 victory.
Elms' junior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) registered 12 saves in the losing effort, while freshman net-minder Alysha Parsons (Newington, Conn.) played the final 8:16 and made her first collegiate save.
Mercy goalkeeper Brittany Ott (Copaigue, N.Y.) added two saves in the win.
Elms returns to non-conference action on Thursday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Vassar College at 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
