Women’s Volleyball Earns Split in Day One Action of the Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Elms College women's volleyball team earned a split during day one action of the 2013 Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State University on Friday evening.

With the split, Elms moves to 1-8. Tournament action will resume on Saturday morning when the Blazers square off against host Plattsburgh State at 9:30 a.m.

St. Michael's 3, Elms 0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-7)

Against St. Michael's, Elms' junior middle hitter JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass.) led all hitters with seven kills, while senior opposite hitter Rachel Cowan (Ellington, Conn.) and sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) added five kills each.

Sophomore setter Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) added 18 assists, while Mack and junior libero Caitlin Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) dug 10 balls each in the losing effort.

St. Michael's hit .348 as a squad, led by six kills from Chelsey Covitz (Marshfield, Mass.), and five from Brianna Saunders (Litchfield, N.H.).

Hillary Miller (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) led the defensive unit with 11 digs – a match best – and Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass.) handed out 13 assists in the winning effort.

Elms 3, Cazenovia 2 (25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-12)

Elms battled back from a 2-1 deficit against Cazenovia and won the final two sets to claim a 3-2 victory. Pickett led the charge with 11 kills and Mack had eight, while Bolton directed the attack with 26 assists.

Larvey led Elms with 12 digs, while Bolton and Pickett chipped in 11 digs each in the winning effort. Mack also served up four aces in the win – the Blazers' first of the season.

Juliann Heigel (Schenectady, N.Y.) registered 11 kills and Shaylia Thomas (Schenectady, N.Y.) totaled nine kills in the loss for Cazenovia, while Samantha McCarthy (Canastota, N.Y.) dished out 34 helpers.

Erin Sweeney (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led four players in double digits for digs with a match-high 17, followed by 16 from McCarthy, 11 from Amethyst Thompson (Manlius, N.Y.) and 10 from Megan Pettit (Aurora, N.Y.).
