Mitchell Uses Late Run To Down Elms Women's Basketball

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Angelica Peguero-Flo turned a dominating 19-point, 17-rebound performance but the Elms College women's basketball team couldn't keep pace with Mitchell College in the final minutes, falling 62-52 on Thursday night.

Peguero-Flo (Springfield, Mass.) scored in double-figures for the third time this season, doing so in three of her last four games. The 19 points and 17 rebounds are both season-highs for the freshman, and it's her second straight double-double. Sophomore Molly Moulton (North Adams, Mass.) added 18 points and four assists for Elms.

The Blazers (7-13, 6-6 New England Collegiate Conference) erased a six-point halftime deficit to tie the game twice late in the third quarter. Elms then got off to a quick start in the fourth to take a 47-43 lead, and it was a one-possession game for much of the fourth quarter.

It was Mitchell (11-11, 10-3 NECC), however, that had the final say. Leading 52-51 with 2:08 to play, the Mariners used a 10-1 run to close the game and pick up the victory.

The Blazers shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) in the game but went 0-for-12 from 3-point range and just 12-of-23 at the free throw line. Mitchell, meanwhile, shot 44.7 percent (21-of-47) from the field. Elms had a 40-36 rebounding advantage and forced the Mariners into 27 turnovers in the game.

Mitchell's Fancesca Pinard (Arlington, Mass.) led all scorers with 24 points and added eight boards. Marissa Sweeney (Hudson, N.H.) added 13 points and four rebounds for the Mariners.

Elms returns has a pair of home games over the weekend, hosting Lesley University on Feb. 10 and Dean College on Feb. 11. Mitchell will be back in action on Feb. 10, hosting Southern Vermont College.
