Cold Shooting Hinders Elms Women's Basketball In Loss To Coast Guard

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Angelica Peguero-Flores' 14-point, 10- rebound double-double wasn't enough for the Elms College women's basketball team to overcome a cold shooting night as the Blazers fell 64-38 to the Coast Guard Academy in non-conference action at Picknelly Arena on Monday night.

Peguero-Flores (Springfield, Mass.) hit 6-of-14 shots from the field and grabbed half of her 10 rebounds on the offensive glass. Kayla Soto added eight points for Elms, but the Blazers (7-12) shot just 24.6 percent (14-of-57) from the field and 20 percent (2-of-10). The cold shooting even spread to the free throw line, where Elms converted just 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) attempts.

Coast Guard (11-10), on the other hand, had no problem shooting the ball, particularly from long range, where the Bears hit 9-of-13 treys. Micaela Martinelli (Vero Beach, Fla.) led the 3-point brigade for CGA, hitting 4-of-5 attempts and finishing with a game-high 16 points. Gillian Gerton (Lorton, Va.) added 12 points and seven boards for the Bears and Annabella Farabaugh (Atlanta, Ga.) chipped in with 10.

The Bears shot 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the field for the game. The Bears also enjoyed a 52-40 advantage on the glass and won the turnover battle, 17-14.

Coast Guard opened the scoring with a 3-pointer from Martinelli, the beginning of an 8-2 run to start the game, and never trailed. The Bears built a 29-17 lead by halftime and steadily added to the cushion throughout the second half to put the game out of reach.

The Blazers return to New England Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday with a trip to Mitchell College before returning home for four of their final five games. Coast Guard will host Smith on Wednesday evening.
