Swim Teams Complete Final Day At NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – The Elms College men's and women's teams completed day three action at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Sunday evening at Upper Valley Aquatic Center.
The men's team placed 10th overall in a field of 13 teams, with Keene State College, Bentley University and Roger Williams University taking the top three spots. The women's team finished ninth overall in the 21 team field, as Bentley, Keene State and Assumption College finishing in first, second and third respectively.
On the men's side, sophomore Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) placed eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:49.08), while sophomore Jonathan Girard (West Springfield, Mass.) placed 13th with a time of 19:11.62.
Senior Nick Whitman (Florence, Mass.) clocked a time of 28.90 in the 50-yard backstroke to come in 13th overall, while junior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) recorded a 14th place mark in the 200-yard breaststroke with a school record time of 2:27.70.
Freshman Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior Nick Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) finished in 11th and 16th places respectively in the 100-yard individual medley with times of 1:00.32 and 1:02.78.
In the men's 400-yard freestyle relay, the squad of Starke, Gehring, Whitman, and Provost placed eighth with a mark of 3:32.44.
For the women's squad, sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Conn.) edged freshman Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 56.66 and 56.69.
DeGrazia also clocked a 29.42 in the 50-yard backstroke to come in eighth place, while sophomore Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) reset her school mark from Sunday's preliminaries with a time of 1:03.41 to finish fourth in the 100-yard indvidual medley. Freshman Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) finished behind Dudunake in seventh place with a time of 1:05.02 in the 100-yard individual medley.
The team of DeGrazia, Bird, Kirchner, and Dudunake reset a school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay setting a new school mark of 3:48.59 and a sixth place finish.
The three-day NEISDA Championships conclude the 2010-11 season for both teams.
