Women’s Swimming Earns Sweep, Men’s Swimming Splits Against Gordon College And Norwich University

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) set a new school record in the 50-meter breaststroke while freshmen Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) and Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) clocked new school marks in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter individual medley respectively in Saturday afternoon's double dual meet against Gordon College and Norwich University at Partyka Natatorium.

On the women's side, Elms beat Gordon 104-17 and Norwich 92-30 to improve to 9-1 overall. Gordon (3-5) beat Norwich (0-10) 58-57.

In the men's meet, Norwich swept Elms (94-28) and Gordon (106-13), while the Blazers defeated Gordon 74-38. Norwich is now 5-5, Gordon is 0-7 and Elms is 3-4 overall.

For the women, DeGrazia set a new school record with a time of 2:16.93 in the 200-meter freestyle, while Kirchner recorded a 1:13.19 in the 100-meter individual medley to stake her new school record.

DeGrazia added victories in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyles with times of 29.44 and 1:03.24, while Kirchner finished first in the 100-meter butterfly (1:17.22).

Senior Theresa Pitassi (Naugatuck, Conn.) won the 50-meter backstroke (36.29) and sophomore Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) touched the wall first in the 50-meter butterfly (33.54). Sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) added a victory in the 400-meter freestyle (5:14.12), while freshman Julia Lane (West Springfield, Mass.) won the 800-meter freestyle (11:05.94) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:18.78).

Norwich received a pair of first place finishes from Anne Marie Vayda (South Burlington, Vt.) in the 50-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter breaststroke.

For the men, Brune notched his school record in the 50-meter breaststroke swimming to a time of 33.63 and a second place finish in the event.

Junior Nick Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) won the 200-meter butterfly (2:39.22) while Brune earned second place in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:17.89).

The Norwich men's team had six different swimmers garner first place honors including a pair of top finishes from Kevin Weber (Stephentown, N.Y.), Patrick Bowden (Cumberland, Maine), Brian Kamp (Santa Claus, Ind.) and Brandon Kelly (Centreville, Md.).

Elms is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 29 when the men's and women's teams travel to Regis College for an 11:00 a.m. dual meet.
