Swim Teams Split At Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.)

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Elms College freshman women's swimmer Emily Schneider (West Kingston, R.I.) earned her first collegiate victory with a win in the 500-yard freestyle to help lift the Blazers to a split in Saturday afternoon's men's and women's swimming dual meet at Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.).

The women's team captured a 129-76 victory to improve to 6-1 overall, while the men's team suffered an 88-76 setback and move to 2-3 on the season.

On the women's side, Schneider clocked a time of 6:14.12 in the 500-yard freestyle while sophomore Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) and freshman Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) placed first and second in the 50-yard freestyle with respective times of 26.45 and 26.54.

Elms also placed one-two in the 100-yard freestyle as sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) notched a 58.78 in front of Dudunake, while freshman Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) secured top honors in the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.26) just ahead of Schneider.

Bird also won the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.80), Kirchner won the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.70) and DeGrazia touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:05.63.

The relay team of Kirchner, Dudunake, Bird and DeGrazia won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:50.08.

For the men, sophomore Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) won the both the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 1:59.81 and 53.82, while junior Nick Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) claimed first place honors in the 200-yard backstroke.

Senior Nick Whitman (Florence, Mass.) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.62) and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke while junior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.55.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Gehring, Brune, Whitman and junior Mike Desmond (Nashua, N.H.) won the race unopposed in a time of 2:01.87.

The women's team is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Western New England College (WNEC) at 6:00 p.m. while the men are back in action on Jan. 22 for tri-meet action against Gordon College and Norwich University at 12:00 p.m.
