Women's Swimming Places First At Mount Saint Mary College Invitational

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Elms College junior Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) won the 100-yard freestyle while five women swimmers won an individual event during Saturday afternoon's men and women's swimming invitational hosted by Mount Saint Mary College.

SUNY Maritime College won the men's side notching 754 points, followed by Mount Saint Mary with 267. The Blazers scored 168 points and finished in third.

Elms won the women's side registering 460.5 points. Mount Saint Mary finished in second with 405 points and St. Joseph College (N.Y.) placed third with 288.5. SUNY Maritime came in fourth with a 133.

On the men's side, LeBarron clocked a 50.41 to win the 100-yard freestyle while sophomore Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) secured first place honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:22.74.

Junior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke (31.25) while LeBarron touched the wall in second place in the 50-yard freestyle notching a time of 23.29.

LeBarron and Gehring swam the first and last legs of the 200-yard freestyle relay and teamed with freshman Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior Neil Carney (West Haven, Conn.) to finish second with a time 1:34.74.

For the women, freshman Julia Lane (West Springfield, Mass.) placed first in the 500-yard freestyle clocking a time of 6:08.46. Freshmen Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) and Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) won the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle events respectively in times of 2:24.16 and 57.26 as both narrowly missed breaking school records.

Senior Theresa Pitassi (Naugatuck, Conn.) glided to a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a 1:02.66.

Junior Ashley Arbo (Kensington, Conn.) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.01) while sophomore Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.), DeGrazia and Arbo finished one-two-three in the 50-yard butterfly clocking times of 30.07, 30.08 and 30.33 respectively.

Kirchner added second place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.55) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.33).

DeGrazia and sophomore Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) came in second and third in the 50-yard freestyle registering times of 26.51 and 26.71 while Arbo finished in a tie of first in the 50-yard backstroke with a 30.84.

The team of Arbo, Kirchner, Furtek and Dudunake won the 200-yard medley relay while the squad of Dudunake, DeGrazia, Pitassi and Furtek won the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The women's swim team returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 when it hosts Simmons College at Partyka Natatorium. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The men's team returns to action on Nov. 13 at St. Joseph's College (Maine).
