Women’s Swimming Downs Bridgewater State To Lift Swim Teams To Split In Thursday’s Dual Meet

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Elms College freshman women's swimmer Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) swam to three first place finishes to help lift the Blazers to a split in Thursday afternoon's men's and women's swimming dual meet at Bridgewater State University.

Elms' women's team won 141-125 to improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Blazers' men's team suffered a 141-112 loss to move to 2-2 overall.

On the women's side, DeGrazia clocked first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.69), the 50-yard freestyle (26.34) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.20). Classmate Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) notched a new school record in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.33) and also finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.38).

The women's team also finished one-two-three in the 50-yard breaststroke as junior Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.) swam to a first place time of 36.38, followed by senior Alison McBride (East Providence, R.I.) (39.64) and freshman Emily Schneider (West Kingston, R.I.) (40.79).

Freshman Julia Lane (West Springfield, Mass.) won the 1650-yard freestyle (21:50.72), while sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) powered to first place in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.48).

The 200-yard medley relay team of DeGrazia, Roberts, Kirchner and Bird also claimed top honors with a time of 2:02.62.

On the men's side, sophomore Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) totaled three top finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:49.70), the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.21) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.16).

Juniors Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) and Nick Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) each added two first place finishes. Brune won the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststrokes in times of 30:53 and 1:09.40 respectively, while Provost notched top times in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.21) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.67).

The squad of Gehring, Brune, Provest and junior Aaron Coifman (Caracas, Venezuela) won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.58.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) at 1:00 p.m.
