Swim Teams Conclude Day One At NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – The Elms College men's and women's swim teams concluded day one action of the three-day New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Friday at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

After day one's prelimary and final events, the men's team is in ninth out of 13 teams, while the women's team is in eighth in a field of 21. 

On the men's side, junior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) swam to an 11th place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke in a time of 29.65, while sophomore Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) clocked a time of 5:05.69 in the 500-yard freestyle to earn 12th place honors.

Junior Nick Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) and freshman Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) each placed 12th in the 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle events turning in respective times of 2:10.82 and 22.59

Senior Nick Whitman (Florence, Mass.) placed 18th overall in the 100-yard butterfly (58.81), while Provost finished in 19th in the event with a clip of 59.23.

The team of Whitman, Brune, Provost and Starke placed 10th in the 400-yard medley relay (3:59.88), while the squad of Starke, Gehring, Brune and Whitman touched the wall in 12th place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.29).

For the women, the relay squad of freshman Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.), sophomore Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.), freshman Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) and sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) set a new school record in the 400-yard medley relay (4:17.69).

Dudunake added a pair of ninth place finishes in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.70) and the 50-yard freestyle (25.95), while Kirchner earned ninth place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22.03.

Junior Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.) placed 17th in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 35.66, while Bird and sophomore Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) registered 12th and 19th place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 26.40 and 27.30 respectively.  

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Dudunake, DeGrazia, Kirchner and Bird placed seventh with a time of 1:44.37.

Both teams return to NEISDA Championship action on Saturday, Feb. 19 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
