Swim Teams Complete Day Two At NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – The Elms College men's and women's swim teams conclude day two action of the three-day New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Saturday at Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

After two days of events, Elms' men's team is in 10th place out of 13 teams, while the women's team is in eighth out of 21 squads.

Preliminaries

For the men, sophomore Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) placed 11th in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:42.88), while junior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) glided to a time of 1:06.79 in the 100-yard breaststroke.  

Freshman Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) notched a 26.21 and 16th place finish in the 50-yard butterfly to advance to the event finals.  

The 200-yard medley relay team of Gehring, Brune, senior Nick Whitman (Florence, Mass.) and Starke clocked a 1:48.18 and a ninth place tally to advance to Saturday's finals.

On the women's side, the 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.), sophomore Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.), freshman Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) and sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) set a new school record with a time of 1:56.50.

DeGrazia also finished 10th in the 200-yard freestyle, setting a new Elms record of 2:03.11 and qualified for Saturday's finals in the event.

Kirchner set a new school mark in the 50-yard butterfly (28.75) and qualified for Saturday's finals in the event.

Sophomore Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) clocked a 29.59 in the 50-yard butterfly to qualify for the finals, while Bird swam to a time of 2:07.18 to advance to Saturday evening's finals.  

Finals

In Saturday evening's finals on the men's side, the 200-yard medley relay team of Whitman, Brune, junior Nick Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) and Starke placed ninth overall with a time of 1:47.01.

Starke added a 16th place finish in the 50-yard butterfly (26.43).

The team of Provost, sophomore Jonathan Girard (West Springfield, Mass.), Whitman and Gehring clocked a time of 8:01.47 to place ninth in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

For the women, the 200-yard medley relay squad of DeGrazia, Dudunake, Kirchner and Bird bested their mark earlier in the day by notching a new school record of 1:56.44 en route to a sixth place finish.

Kirchner broke her own school record in the 50-yard butterfly from earlier in the day with a time of 28.50 in the finals to capture ninth place.

DeGrazia also reset the school mark she had set earlier in the day by clocking a time of 2:02.11 in the 200-yard freestyle to place ninth in the event.

Elms' 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Julia Lane (West Springfield, Mass.), freshman Emily Schneider (West Kingston, R.I.), sophomore Tricia Ruell (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.) placed 18th with a time of 9:20.88.

The Elms swim teams conclude the 2010-11 season on Sunday, Feb. 20 with the last day of the three-day NEISDA Championships beginning with the preliminaries at 9:00 a.m.
