CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Field Hockey team hosted the Western Connecticut State University for their season opener in non-conference action on Sunday morning at Leary Field.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 1 | Western Connecticut State University 10
Records: Blazers 0-1, 0-0 (GNAC) | Wolves 2-0, 0-0 (LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Connecticut would control offensive momentum for the majority of the first half, scoring three unanswered goals in the first quarter. Elms first-year goaltender Emily Hunt (Montrose, N.Y.) would stop an additional six shots. The second quarter would see first-year Lily Sheridan (Ashby, Mass.) find an open senior Nina Bourassa (West Springfield, Mass.) for their first goal of the game in the opening minute of the quarter. The Blazers defense would hold the Wolves to only one goal in the quarter with Hunt adding seven more saves to the statbook, with the score going into the halftime break 4-1.
The third quarter would see Western Connecticut score three quick goals and saw Elms change goaltenders with junior Katelyn Volk (Warwick, R.I.). The fourth and final quarter would see the Wolves score an additional three goals but junior defender Elizabeth Franzoni (Rutland, Vt.) would make an incredible defensive save to help her goaltender and her team in their season and home opener. Unfortunately, Western Connecticut would spoil their efforts defeating Elms 10-1.
