Field Hockey Trumps Becker

The Elms College field hockey team downed host Becker College, 2-0, Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. With the win, the Blazers move to 9-8 on the season and 7-2 in the NECC, while the Hawks drop to 4-15 and 4-5 in NECC play.

The Blazers started their numerous runs down the field early posting their first corner opportunity of the contest at the 1:39 marker off the stick of senior Stephanie Esposito (Orange, Conn.).  Throughout the first Elms would lead in corners 8-1 and shots 8-1. After 28 minutes of scoreless action Elms would finally crack the scoreboard as sophomore Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) found the back of the cage off of a freshmen Madison Gabel (Agawam, Mass.) feed that was placed inside the circle. From there sophomore Hayley Omahen (El Cajon, Calif.) made her way through the entire Hawk defensive line to receive a Messier ball and chip it into the cage to put Elms up 2-0 with 38 seconds remaining in the first.

The second half saw defensive efforts from both sides of the scoreboard as sophomore Elysabeth Jefferies (Lisbon Falls, Maine) posted five saves in a row for Becker to keep hope alive. However the Blazers would continue to push nursing their lead until the final minutes of action to walk away with the 2-0 triumph.

Sophomore keeper Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) posted 4 saves on the day while Jefferies collected nine on the afternoon.
