Field Hockey Dispatches Daniel Webster

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey team grabbed their sixth conference win of the season, defeating the visiting Daniel Webster Eagles, 10-0, in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchup Wednesday evening at Leary Field. With the win, the Blazers move to 8-7 on the season and 6-1 in the NECC, while the Eagles drop to 0-10 and 0-5 in the conference. For the match, the Blazers partnered with Play4TheCure for their annual "Pink Out" match, promoting Breast Cancer awareness.

The Blazers rolled onto the scoreboard early in the first with a tally from sophomore Hayley Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) off of a senior Stephanie Esposito (Orange, Conn.) penalty corner that found the stick of sophomore Reilly Griffin (Hatfield, Mass.) fifty three seconds into the half to give the Blazers the early advantage. From there a Griffin ball from the right sideline found the stick of sophomore Jeszenia McGuire (Branfield, Mass.), who notched the second goal of the evening at the 6:34 tally.

As play ensued Esposito made a run down the mid field line to curve a ball into the circle finding the stick of Omahen who tallied her second score of the night. After eight minutes of scoreless action sophomore Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) fired an unassisted tally into the back of the cage off of a Blazer run down the sideline headed by Esposito.  Less than a minute later, McGuire racked in her second goal of the night to create a 5-0 scoring gap between the Blazers and the Eagles.

At the 30:19 mark, freshmen Alexandra Khalsa (Smithfield, R.I.) rang in her first goal of the 2016 campaign off of a freshmen Madison Gabel (Agawam, Mass.) blast from inside the circle that propelled off of Khalsa's stick.  Esposito and Messier would both go on to net scores before the end of the first half to close out the scoring column with Elms owning an 8-0 advantage.

Elms once again exploded on a high note to start off the second half with Omahen posting her third tally of the night capturing her first career hat trick off of a Gabel ball near the right post. Messier would close out the scoring for the evening, also registering a hat trick, off of an Omahen assist to capture the shutout victory.

The Blazers outshot the Eagles, 40-1, during the contest. Sophomore Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) posted 1 save on the day while freshmen Ashlyn Farwell (Pelham N.H.) collected 20 on the afternoon.

The Blazers will return to action on Saturday as they will travel to Wheelock for an 11 a.m.start. The Eagles will face off against Regis Saturday the 21^st for a 4 p.m. start time.
