Blazer's Fall To Colby Sawyer In Home Opener

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey team fell to Colby Sawyer, 5-1, in their 2016 home opener at Leary Field Sunday afternoon. The Blazers move to 0-2 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 2-1 overall.

The match opened to back and forth attacks from both squads as each team contested their way up and down the turf. The Chargers anchored the first scoring opportunity of the contest as they fired a corner attempt at the 8:29 mark which Elms deflected out of the box. A minute later after a run down the right side, Colby Sawyer bounced back lighting up the scoreboard with a freshmen Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, ME) goal in the 10th minute to harness a 1-0 advantage.
Elms continued to rally and remain constant as sophomore Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) shut down three back-and-forth shot attempts from the sticks of sophomore Jordan Teixeira (Exeter, N.H) and senior Erika Leach (Barrington, N.H) to keep the Blazers intact. With seven minutes remaining in the first, Elms pushed their way into the scoring zone with a goal from freshman Jeszenia McGuire (Branfield, Mass.), the first goal of her career, to knot up the contest. The teams headed into the halftime knotted at 1-1.

Despite Blazer efforts, the Chargers were able to enhance their lead capturing their second goal of the afternoon at the 9:32 mark of the second half after senior Allyse Mullen (Wilder, VT) passed a lateral ball across the cage to the stick of sophomore Darby Nolet (Marion, Mass.) who sent it home posting a 2-1 lead. Colby Sawyer continued to push producing goals from Rachel Fisher (Lynn, Mass.), Teixeira, and Mullen to close out the afternoon holding a 5-1 scoreboard.

The Chargers outshot the Blazers, 28-4, during the contest. Lapponese stopped 14 shots for the Blazers, while Colby Sawyer's sophomore Xena Ras (Medfield, Mass.) put a stop to two Elms shots.

The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, September 10th as they will play host to WPI for 1PM start. The Chargers will face off against Regis College September 7th with 4PM game time.
