Anika Goodhue Tabbed as Head Field Hockey Coach

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College Athletic Department has announced that Anika Goodhue has been selected as the new Head Coach of the Elms College Field Hockey program, effective August 1, 2016 in an announcement from Elms College Athletics Director Ellen McEwen.

Goodhue comes to Elms after serving as assistant field hockey coach at Connecticut College. In her two seasons with the Camels, the field hockey team posted an 11-19 record while claiming consecutive National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Honors. Goodhue helped groom Heidi Halsted to back-to-back All-New England West Region Second Team selections. Goodhue also provided freelance photography for the Camel Athletic program.

"Elms has a bit of a hidden gem feeling to me," expressed Goodhue. "The field hockey program has so much potential to take over the NECC with student-athletes who are eager to learn and compete hard for their school. Couple that with the incredibly inviting and tight knit community that not only the Athletic Department, but the campus as a whole embodies."

Goodhue was a four-year player for the Smith College field hockey program, and served as a team captain during her senior season. During a versatile career where she played offense, defense and midfield, Anika registered five goals, 18 assists and one defensive save. In addition to collegiate athletics, Goodhue has played internationally in five different countries, including a six-month stint in Australia, where she was a key performer for the University of Melbourne Hockey Club.

"My strengths have always been in technical development and in breaking down the game into its smaller components," said Goodhue. "I'm big on building strong relationships with my student-athletes as well so I can not only determine how their strengths and quirks will best fit into the team plan, but also to see them blossom and grow as a person."

Anika's passion for coaching began in high school with the urge to share her knowledge by hosting youth clinics. As her career progressed, Goodhue coached athletes of all ages and experience levels. After graduating from Smith College, Anika returned to coach Mount Anthony Union High School, her alma mater, and helped lead the squad to four Vermont State semifinal appearances in five seasonS. Goodhue has also assisted at Westfield State University during their spring seasons in 2014 and 2015.

"It is my vision to become a smarter and more cohesive team with everyone working hard for each other and really embracing their passion for field hockey," continued Goodhue. "If every member of the team is enjoying what they are doing, understanding how important their contributions are, and achieving both individual and team goals, the rest of it will come easy."

Goodhue founded Evolution Field Hockey Club to help stimulate growth and knowledge of field hockey in her hometown. Focused on youth development, Goodhue has also created opportunities for adults to play after graduation, and developed a young coaches program that mentored interested high school athletes in coaching.
