Women’s Swimming Tied For Second In Day One Of GNAC Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College sophomore Ashley Arbo (Kensington, Conn.) set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle, and was the second leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that also broke a school record to help the Blazers to a three-way tie for second place in the first day of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s swimming championships hosted by Simmons College.

Host Simmons College is currently in first place with 164 points, while Elms is in a three-way split with Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) and Saint Joseph College (Conn.) – all with 67 points. Husson University and Norwich University round out the six participating squads with 51 and 50 points respectively.

The team of freshman Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.), Arbo, freshman Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) and junior Theresa Pitassi (Naugatuck, Conn.) combined to break the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.91 en route to a second place finish.

Dudunake swam a 26:09 in the 50-yard freestyle to break a school record, while Arbo’s school record in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.61) came in the preliminary round. Arbo then clocked a 2:09.27 in the finals of the event to capture a second-place finish.

Bird finished third in the 200-freestyle, registering a personal-best time of 2:11.05. Sophomore Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.) also added a personal-best finish, notching a 1:17.39 in the 100-yard breaststroke en route to third-place honors.

The Blazers will return to GNAC Championship action on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 9:00 a.m.
