Women's Soccer Loses a Nail-Biter to Colby-Sawyer at Home

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elms College Women's Soccer team hosted Colby-Sawyer College in a conference matchup Wednesday evening at Leary Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half would see both teams' offenses take early shots, with shots from junior forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.) and senior Kelly Malheiro (Centereach, N.Y.) and three saves from senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Quick (Barrington, N.H.). Sophomore Emily Basua (Oxnard, Cali.) would take her first shot minutes later, followed by a save by Quick and a blocked shot by the Blazers defense. The Chargers would take three shots in the final minutes of the opening half, but the Elms defense would make one block and Quick made two saves. Graduate forward Kellie Smith (Marshfield, Mass.) would take a shot but it would go wide left and the score would remain scoreless going into the halftime break.

The second half would see both teams taking shots quickly out of the break, Basua would take one shot and Quick made a save, but Colby-Sawyer would take a shot and find the back of the net for the first goal of the game. McDonough, Basua, and first-year Jenna McGuire (Shelton, Conn.) would each take shots, but they would all be saved. Then in the 73rd minute of play, the Blazers offense would create pressure in the Colby-Sawyer defensive end of the field, and the Chargers would commit a foul. Graduate midfielder Hannah Kolodziey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) would take the free kick and shoot a rocket to the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. The Colby-Sawyer offense would then take six shots, with Quick saving two of those shots, but the Chargers would find a way to score the go-ahead goal to take the lead. Quick would make one more save and sophomore Lilli Ramos (Springfield, Mass.) would take one more shot, but Colby-Sawyer would win the conference matchup 2-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Quick would make 11 saves of the 13 shots she faced.

  • Basua would take three shots with one shot on net.

  • Malheiro and McDonough would both take two shots, with a combined three shots on net.

  • Kolodziey, McGuire, Ramos, and Smith would each take one shot during the game.

  • The Elms offense would take 11 shots.
