Smith's Hat Trick Powers Blazers to 3-3 Draw at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Elms College Women's Soccer team traveled to play against Norwich University in a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

At the start of the first half, Norwich started with a strong offensive possession, however senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Quick (Barrington, N.H.) made a big save within the first 5 minutes. The Cadets would be able to find their way around Quick, scoring the first goal of the game in the 11th minute of play. Then sophomore forward/midfielder Emily Basua (Oxnard, Cali.) and junior forward Jamie McDonough (Dedham, Mass.) would have two shots on goal. Shortly thereafter, Norwich would score once again after a penalty kick goal in the 30th minute. Quick would have another save to end the first half. Unfortunately, Elms would not have another offensive possession, but the Blazers defense would play hard going into the halftime break down 2-0.

At the start of the second half, Elms would come out of the gate with another two shots, made by Basua and graduate student midfielder Hannah Kolodziey (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Quick would have another big save. Then McDonough and senior midfielder Lindsey Jeffrey (Lincoln, R.I.) would have back-to-back shots on goal. Then, graduate student forward Kellie Smith (Marshfield, Mass.) would have two goals in the 77th and 80th minutes of play, in between the two goals Basua would record another shot. After the second goal by Smith, Elms would tie the game. Basua would have two more shots before Smith would score a third goal for the Blazers in the 88th minute, to tie the game, making the score 3-3. The two sides continued to play strong until the final whistle blew as both sides would walk away a point as a result of a draw.
