Serra's Goal Keeps Blazers Alive in Double Overtime, Falling in Shootouts to Falcons

NEW HAVEN, CT- Post graduate Ellie Serra would score early in the contest, putting the Blazers up 1-0 for the first half. The Falcons would tie up the score in the third, ending the game in a 1-1 draw. Both teams would battle for two scoreless overtimes. The Blazers would fall to the Falcons in shootouts, final score 2-1.

How it Happened

The Blazers outshot the Falcons 2-0 in the first quarter with one of the shots being a goal from post grad Ellie Serra to put Elms in the lead 1-0. The first half was a very evenly matched play for both teams, Blazers led across the board going 6-5 in shots and 6-5 in corners. Kaitlyn Lynes kept the half scoreless for the Falcons having 5 saves in the second quarter. Elms would lead 1-0 over the Falcons heading into the half.

With the second half underway Albertus Magnus opened the floodgates with an immmediate shot on goal a minute into play. After two shot attempts on goal saved by Blazers goalkeeper Lynes, they were able to sneak one in the bag of the cage at the 35 minute mark by Ariana Martin to tie up the score 1-1. The Blazers would try and answer back with shots on goal by Victoria Accorsi and Katie Jones, but neither were able to hit the backboards. Both teams would have five shots in the second half trying to score the winning goal but niether were able to punch one in. The game would head into overtime, tied 1-1.

The Falcons would have the upper hand in the first overtime have two shots on goal. Lynes protected the cage collecting two saves, keeping the Falcons at one for the first overtime. Albertus would also have the one and only corner of the first overtime.

Heading into the second overtime Elms would get two shots off, one from junior Samantha Bonneau that would end up being deflected by a Falcons defender. Immediatly followed by a shot on goal by Abbie Sierzego that would be stopped by Falcons goalkeeper Serena Montague. The second overtime would remain scoreless sending the contest into shootouts.

The Blazers and the Falcons each get four opportunities to have a field player go against the opponents goalkeeper. Each fielder has 8 seconds from when they touch the ball on the 25 yard line to try and score on the opposing teams goalkeeper. Albertus Magnes' Melina Tarzia was up third for the Falcons where she was able to get around Lynes to put the falcons up 1-0 in shootouts. Hannah St. John from Elms had a chance to answer back but unfortunatly ran out of time before she could hit the back of the cage. The fourth Falcon up, Alexandra Barrett got tangled up with Blazers' Lynes and was rewarded a stroke where she top left shelfed it to put the Falcons up 2-0 in shootouts. Ellie Serra was the final Blazer to rebuttle for a shootout point but was unable to get the ball past Falcons goalkeeper Montague. The Blazers would fall 2-1 to GNAC opponent Albertus Magnus.
